A Beginner's Guide to Tajweed Rules
Tajweed is the set of rules governing the proper pronunciation and recitation of the Quran. The word Tajweed comes from the Arabic root meaning 'to improve' or 'to beautify'.
What is Tajweed?
The obligation of Tajweed is established in the Quran itself: 'And recite the Quran with measured recitation' (Surah Al-Muzzammil, 73:4).
Points of Articulation (Makharij)
Makharij al-Huruf are the foundational concept of Tajweed. There are 17 articulation points grouped into five main areas: the throat, the tongue, the lips, the nasal passage, and the empty space in the mouth.
